Protest Timeline
May 26: Four officers involved in the arrest of George Floyd are fired. Protests begin as the video of the arrest is shared widely on social media. Hundreds of demonstrators take to the streets of Minneapolis and vandalise police cars and the police station with graffiti. Hundreds in the city protest against Floydβs killing and demand the four officers involved be held accountable.
The four officers involved in Floydβs deadly arrest are fired.
May 27: Protesters throng streets around Minneapolis's Third Precinct police station, chanting, "No justice, no peace" and "I can't breathe." Police use tear gas, plastic bullets and concussion grenades to keep the crowds at bay. A nearby Target is looted. Protests spread to other cities including Memphis, Louisville and Los Angeles. In some places, like Portland, Oregon, protesters lie in the road, chanting "I canβt breathe".
Demonstrators again gather around the police station in Minneapolis where the officers involved in George Floydβs arrest were based and set fire to it. The building is evacuated and police retreat.
Protesters stream onto a highway in Los Angeles.
May 28: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activates the National Guard. A state of emergency is declared by MinneapolisΒ Mayor Jacob Frey.Β
President Trump blames the violence on a lack of leadership in Minneapolis and threatens to send in the National Guard in a tweet.Β He follows it up in a second tweet with a warning "when the looting starts, the shooting starts". The second tweet is hidden by Twitter for "glorifying violence".
Protests continue to spread across the US.Β
May 29: A CNN reporter, Omar Jimenez, is arrested while covering the Minneapolis protest. Mr Jimenez was reporting live when police officers handcuffed him. A few minutes later several of his colleagues are also arrested. They are all later released once they are confirmed to be members of the media.
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, 44, is charged with murder and manslaughter. The charges carry a combined maximum 35-year sentence.
May 30: Multiple cities, including Atlanta, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, impose curfews after civil disturbances.
May 31: Tens of thousands of Americans protest across the country; some demonstrations erupt into arson and violence in the evening. A truck drives into protesters in Minneapolis. National Guard troops are called in to over a dozen states. Violence spreads across the US on the sixth night of protests. A total of at least five people are reported killed in protests from Indianapolis to Chicago. More than 75 cities have seen protests. At least 4,400 people have been arrested.Β Curfews are imposed across the US to try to stem the unrest.
June 1: Protests over racial injustice spread oversea to Amsterdam, Spain and Nairobi, among other cities.
June 2: Tens of thousands of protesters again take to the streets. One of the biggest protests is in George Floydβs hometown of Houston, Texas. Many defy curfews in several cities, but the demonstrations are largely peaceful.
June 4: A memorial service for George Floyd is held in Minneapolis.Β Those gathered in tribute stand in silence for eight minutes, 46 seconds, the amount of time Mr Floyd is alleged to have been on the ground under arrest. Hundreds attended the service, which heard a eulogy from civil rights activist Rev Al Sharpton.
June 7: As the US saw another weekend of protests, with tens of thousands marching in Washington DC, anti-racism demonstrations were held around the world.
In Australia, there were major protests in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane that focused on the treatment of indigenous Australians. There were also demonstrations in France, Germany, Spain and the UK. In Bristol, protesters tore down the statue of a 17th century slave trader and threw it into the harbour.
June 9: A funeral service for George Floyd is held in Houston, Mr Floydβs home town. Just over two weeks after his death in Minneapolis and worldwide anti-racism protests, about 500 guests invited by the Floyd family are in attendance at the Fountain of Praise Church.Β Many more gather outside to show their support.
June 12: The Minneapolis City Council votes to replace the police department with a community-led public safety system.
In Atlanta, Rayshard Brooks, a Black man, is killed by a police officer after falling asleep in a Wendyβs restaurant drive-through lane.
June 13: Protesters burn down the Wendyβs where Brooks was killed. Anti-racist demonstrators and counter-protesters clash in London.
June 19: Americans commemorate Juneteenth.
Colorado becomes one of the first U.S. states to strip police officers of qualified immunity.

Abstract
WOKE NET is an aggregate live stream site with a virtual community<[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_community](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_community)> component. While the community itself exists mostly online, the network maintains relationships with various individuals and communities both online and offline creating a unique method of participating in current activism and politics.Β
---
Description/Philosophy/Purpose
The community consists entirely of volunteers. While decentralised, it focuses largely on events occurring within the United States. Participation ranges from programming to on-the-ground live streaming to political theory to education to support. One of the most significant features of the platform/community is the aggregation and discussion of near-continuous live unedited footage of major events.
The community has two main aims: one social and one technological. In terms of social goals, the community provides access to a near real-time live stream network across several social media platforms ranging from established social media accounts and their own website. Users view live streams of events that are displayed through Streamwall. These events are usually discussed in chat rooms on the various social media platforms where the live stream is hosted. Streamwall is the main feature of WOKE NET. Streamwall combines multiple live streams and presents it as one live video. Live streams have featured content ranging from protests, riots, mutual aid events such as during the wildfires of 2020 in the Pacific Northwest, and political briefings related to the 2020 election and the coronavirus pandemic.
From the website:
WOKE is a digital collective of humans unlike any other on a mission to amplify voices that otherwise go unheard around the world, our shared journey is in the pursuit of truth, knowledge and understanding.
Our intention with the WOKE NETWORK is to provide humans direct and unfiltered access to the live and unfiltered views of other humans across the world, as events occur itβs more important than ever to have the most perspective possible to make an accurate and informed decision. The world has never been presented with a resource quite like this before.
We are still a very new community, every day our ambition is to reflect and grow towards bettering ourselves and improving our individual contributions as the project evolves over this historic and uncertain period of our modern human history.
Streamwall.io was developed by <chromakode> specifically for WOKE NET to operate. Streamwall βcomposes multiple livestreams into a single feed with source attributions and audio controlβ <[https://streamwall.io/](https://streamwall.io/)>. As people began to live stream vigils, protests, and riots across the United States after the killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 <[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_George_Floyd](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_George_Floyd)>, it became clear that the presentation of clips from mainstream news outlets or live feeds from mainstream or local news outlets was insufficient to meet the desires of those trying to understand what was happening. Distrust in established news sources has surged in recent years <[https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1464884918808134](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1464884918808134)> <[https://www.pulitzer.org/article/why-do-so-many-americans-distrust-media](https://www.pulitzer.org/article/why-do-so-many-americans-distrust-media)> <[http://assets.press.princeton.edu/chapters/s9607.pdf](http://assets.press.princeton.edu/chapters/s9607.pdf)> <[https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23808985.2020.1755338](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23808985.2020.1755338)> <[https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/01/24/qa-how-pew-research-center-evaluated-americans-trust-in-30-news-sources/](https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/01/24/qa-how-pew-research-center-evaluated-americans-trust-in-30-news-sources/)>.

History
Woke live streams begin on Day 11 which corresponds to June 08, 2020. Days on the Woke live stream correspond to days since May 29, 2020 - the date of the first broadcast.
1. Development
2. Woke 1.0 was run manually from Open Broadcaster Software, OBS, <[https://obsproject.com/](https://obsproject.com/)> <[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Broadcaster_Software](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Broadcaster_Software)>, and streamed to Twitch on the Woke account. By using OBS, the Woke team was able to put together multiple streams on the same screen for viewers who could then discuss events using the chat feature on Twitch. Thus the Woke community was created.
[NOTES] Rince: So i wasnt around for a lot of the OBD days, but i know a little about it. OBD required a lot more back end work, you had to do everything from controlling audio levels to carefully sizing videos (there was no grid). Tree has some screenshots, but the upshot is that there is a LOT more work involved in getting the feeds set up and going and then cleaning the workspace afterwards. With streamwall all of that is done for you, including the audio. It didnt change things so much as it greatly simplified and sped up the process of getting a submitted link from the spreadsheet to the wall.
3. Woke 2.0
It soon became clear that OBS was not sufficient for this purpose in terms of user-friendliness in finding live streams and displaying them. Streamwall.io was developed to address certain weaknesses from OBS. The development of Streamwall gave curators an easier user-interface in terms of being able to find, vet, and select streams using the softwareβs Retool feature.
[NOTES] Rince: So there have been several different ways that has worked. In the beginning people simply dropped links in chat and tree added them to the OBS wall. Then he added a submission form, this goes to a google spreadsheet. Once its vetted and approved it was added to the wall. Once streamwall came about, the google spreadsheets were linked to streamwall and the links appear automatically when approved. Model_2 added a program called retool to his version of streamwall that scrapes links from a bunch of different chats and checks them before adding them to the database. We considered doing the same at woke, but retool is expensive and we have had issues with it going down and acting weird when it interacts with our google spreadsheets.]
Currently we use the submission form off the website, that sends the link to a spreadsheet, once approved, that link gets sent to a second sheet, and from there we can mark it live or offline. Then based on its status, it gets added to the list of links on streamwall.
During this period, Woke 2.0 began to experience some issues with the social media platforms to which it was streaming.
1. Social Media Platform Bans
2. Twitch Ban
On October 14, 2020, Woke was issued a 14 day ban on their main social media streaming platform, Twitch. The ban was issued for βattempting or threatening to steal or damage another person's propertyβ.Β
2. YouTube Ban
One video was removed from YouTube for a DMCA violation.
3. Woke 3.0 has recently gone live in beta format <woke.net>. The new platform features the streamwall itself as well as a chat function. Additional features for the website remain to be seen. However, the stream itself is still cast to several of the communityβs social media platforms.
